Songwriting is probably the most rewarding craft in the world! There is no greater joy than knowing your songs are being heard by thousands, and earning you bucks while you sleep at night!

I have been helping songwriters sharpen their skills for 15 years. In my one-on-one sessions I create a safe environment where we'll focus on the following:

Lyric writing:

- Finding the magic: techniques for kick-starting ideas and getting the creative juices flowing
- Focusing your idea so it all sits together!
- Rhyme: learn about all the different rhyme types and rhyme schemes. Yes, there are more options than "breaking - aching" and "heart - apart" ! Rhyme is a science.
- Making your lyrics more colourful with the use of metaphors and avoiding clichés

Melody writing:

- Writing strong enough hooks to create ear worms
- Keeping the melody simple enough for listeners to sing-along
- Creating melodic contours that engage the listener

I hold a B.A. Honours Degree in Live Performance with songwriting as one of my outcomes and trained with Prof. Pat Pattison, songwriting professor at the Berklee College. I'm an external examiner for AIM (The Australian Institute of Music) for their B Mus Composition program.

The ability to play an instrument is not essential, although it is an advantage. You must be able to sing a basic melody and have a love for working with words.

My studio is in a peaceful setting overlooking Sydney Harbour (see picture). It's a 6 minute walk from Kurraba Point wharf (Neutral Bay service) ... 15 mins from Circular Quay. A dedicated parking bay is available from 9 - 5 pm. My sessions include refreshments like coffee⁄tea.

Introductory rate of $75⁄session (60 mins) or $100⁄session for 90 mins. Discounted rates apply for purchasing a batch of 4 lessons: $280 for 4 x 60 min lessons and $360 for 4 x 90 min lessons. You are required to commit to 4 lessons at a time.

I was signed to Universal Publishing in 2009 and my songs have been heard on TV and radio since I was 16 years old (listen to two examples of my work at https:⁄⁄⁄philip-de-villiers-1). Since 2007 I have worked closely with Universal Music to deliver a globe trotting female star, with whom I co-wrote a song that was used in a motion picture with Hillary Swank ( I have won two awards for my songwriting and also produced a song and a scene for the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

I also advise my students on the business side of songwriting: how to register your material, have your songs published or how to self-publish, how to maximise revenue from your songs by exploring all income streams available to you as a songwriter!
